The Shy Rainbow (or simply just "Shy Rainbow") is the 19th episode of Dora the Explorer from Season 4.

In production order, it is the 16th episode of Season 4.

Dora and Boots need to get a shy little rainbow to Rainy Mountain so that he can shine in the sky. But to get to Rainy Mountain, they have to go over the Troll Bridge, and across Sneezing Snake Lake, and they better hurry. Will you help Arco Iris get to Rainy Mountain so he can shine in the sky for the very first time?

Dora & Boots climb up Rainbow Rock to look at rainbows of many different sizes. They saw a big rainbow and a bigger one. But when it was time to reveal the BIGGEST rainbow, it wasn't there. The sun says that he needs a rainbow right away. So Dora & Boots immediately searched for the missing rainbow. It hid behind a little waterfall. His name is Arco Iris. Dora tells him that the sun needs a rainbow right away. Arco Iris was shy because he never appeared up in the sky where everybody can see him. Dora confesses that she can be shy sometimes too, the same goes with Boots. Dora & Boots wanted Arco Iris to show its colors. Arco Iris had 4 colorful stripes that sparkle. On the top, there was a red stripe; on the top middle there was a blue stripe; on the bottom middle, there was a green stripe, and on the very bottom there was a yellow stripe. After listing the colors, the sun tells Dora & Boots that they have to take Arco Iris to Rainy Mountain right away. So they check Map to find the quickest route to Rainy Mountain. He tells them that they had to go across the troll bridge and across Sneezing Snake Lake to get there. Dora & Boots are ready to get Arco Iris to Rainy Mountain. Along the way, they sing "De Colores" with Fiesta Trio, who are now wearing the mariachi outfit and they play a trumpet (like in the very first episode of the very first season), a guitar and a violin instead of playing drums, accordion and cymbals. After the song, Dora, Boots, and Arco Iris reach the troll bridge. Grumpy Old Troll sings his song, but Dora cuts him off and explains to him that she and Boots are in a big hurry to get Arco Iris to Rainy Mountain so he can shine in the sky. Grumpy Old Troll makes some bridge pieces fall apart using a remote control. Dora & Boots had to put their intelligence to the test putting the bridge boards back into place. They noticed that there is a pattern on the bridge. It went green, green, blue, blue. After fixing the pattern on the troll's bridge, they went across to the other side. Dora & Boots sing the "De Colores" song again. After that, Dora, Boots, and Arco Iris reach Sneezing Snake Lake. Then they noticed that the boat, the paddles and life jackets were missing some of their color. The boat was red, the paddles were yellow, and the life jackets were orange. Boots notices that Arco Iris didn't have an orange stripe, but Arco Iris had a trick; he made orange by mixing red and yellow together. After that, they heard Swiper, who's on a kayak with his red lifejacket and uses his hands to swim instead of using oars to paddle. but Dora, Boots, and Arco Iris managed to stop him by saying "Swiper no swiping!" 3 times and he went "Oh man!" and ran away. Dora & Boots paddled the boat across sneezing snake lake and then they heard the sneezing snakes coming towards them. They rowed super fast to get away from them. Dora, Boots, and Arco Iris go through a large gap in the wall. They have to fix the wall or else the snakes will still follow them and catch them. Arco Iris painted it red so that the sneezing snakes couldn't follow them. The sneezing snakes bump into the wall and swim away. Dora, Boots, and Arco Iris make it across Sneezing Snake Lake. They were getting so close to Rainy Mountain. It was so far away, but Arco Iris turns into an uplifting parachute so that he, Dora, and Boots can make it up to the top fast. After getting to the top of Rainy Mountain, Arco Iris got all dirty. Dora calls out to an explorer star after she and Boots caught it before the start of the episode. It's Sliparooni the soapy explorer star! He comes out of the star pocket and gets Arco Iris all shiny and clean in no time. Not too long after that, Arco Iris is finally ready to shine in the sky and is not very shy anymore. They said "buena suerte" to wish him good luck. Arco Iris stretched his 4 colorful stripes and he became the biggest rainbow of all. Everyone saw it and they were happy to see it. The episode ends with Dora & Boots singing "De Colores" to Arco Iris one more time as they slide down him.

This episode can be found on the DVD with the same name.

  • Dora and Boots admit that sometimes they feel shy when they interacted with the not-so-called Shy Rainbow.
  • This is the 2nd episode where Dora and Boots went across Sneezing Snake Lake, first being Whose Birthday is It?.
    • Coincidentally, it was the second location in both this and the aforementioned episode.
    • Not only that, but the snake sneezes have also been re-recorded just for this episode.
  • This is the 12th episode featuring the Grumpy Old Troll and the 11th time Dora and Boots cross the troll bridge.
  • Since this episode starts on Rainbow Rock, it's possible that this episode takes place directly after Best Friends.
  • In TV airing order, this episode comes between the two Super Spy episodes.
  • There was no star-catching on this episode, but an Explorer Star minigame was used anyway instead of a Character Find. However, Sliparooni star did appear when he cleaned out Arco Iris.
    • It is possible that Dora and Boots caught him before the start of the episode like in Dora's Got a Puppy where they caught Spy Star before the start of the aforementioned episode.
    • In production order, this is the final episode where the star pocket is used.
  • This is the fourth instance where any Explorer Star does not appear until reaching the destination after What Happens Next?, The Super Silly Fiesta, and Dora's Fairytale Adventure.
  • This is the 1st episode to premiere in 2008 after the 2007 DVD.
  • In airing order, Map will no longer say "So you tell Dora:" from now on. He instead says "So tell Dora:".
  • The book "Dora and the Rainbow Kite Festival" is based on this episode.
  • This is the 97th episode of the show.
  • This is one of few episodes where the Fiesta Trio does not play their fanfare (or in mariachi style) to begin We Did It.
  • This is one of few episodes where Map's zoom-wipe effect is used after telling the viewers to go to the first and last locations.
  • At the end of this episode, Dora does not asks the viewer "What was your favorite part of the trip?", she instead asks "What was your favorite color?". Then, she says "That’s a great color" after waiting for the viewers response instead of the usual "I like that too", followed by Dora and Boots talking about their favorite colors instead of the favorite part of the trip (Boots likes red and yellow and Dora likes green and blue).
  • Grumpy Old Troll sings I'm the Grumpy Old Troll song but Dora cuts him off from singing it and just asks him if they can go over his bridge because she was in a very big rush to get to Rainy Mountain.
  • The Troll Bridge is not just blue like all other episodes, it is blue and green.
  • Dora and Boots sing De Colores in place of the Travel Song in this episode.
  • This is the first (and only) time seeing Map a different color, first he shows himself yellow and red and then he turns orange when he tells the viewer that the colors yellow and red make orange.
  • Although this episode premiered in 2005 originally scheduled, 2006 (Nick Jr. UK and Treehouse), 2007 (DVD), 2008 (Nickelodeon US), and 2011 (Nick Jr.), it was produced in 2003 according to the end credits.
  • During the end credits and Sliparooni’s mini-game, the Blue Cursor is facing left instead of right like in ¡Por Favor!.
    • However, unlike the episode ¡Por Favor! of counting in English, this episode is going to find the stars and count them in Spanish.
      • In many foreign adaptations, it still has the counting in English version.
        • As usual, YouTube speeds up the credits and whooshes the episode to the left at the end. The credits are instrumental, but the sound effects remain, so they're out of sync until the sped-up credits end. The 1999 Nick Jr. Productions logo is also sped-up.
  • This is the last episode to premiere on the YouTube channel when it was known as "Bubble Guppies", before its relaunch as “Dora & Friends”.
  • Arco Iris, the shy rainbow, only has four colors, red, blue, green, and yellow.
  • This is the eighth episode in which Dora does not look inside Backpack.
  • This was the first episode not to be released on VHS (excluding any DVD bonus episodes).
  • This episode premiered the same day as Catch the Stars VHS and DVD.
  • This is the fourth episode where Grumpy Old Troll challenges Dora and Boots with something other than a riddle, something that happened in To the Monkey Bars, Baseball Boots, and The Super Silly Fiesta.
    • However, the fixing bridge is a challenge that has a riddle.
  • This episode aired just 5 days after the country of Kosovo declared its independence to the countries that acknowledge the recognition of the country of Kosovo.
  • The Fiesta Trio is wearing their mariachi outfit, and the frog now has a trumpet instead of drums like in The Legend of the Big Red Chicken, the grasshopper has a guitar instead of accordion and the snail has a violin instead of cymbals.
  • This is the second colors-themed episode after Quack! Quack!.
  • This is the third time the sun talks after Louder! and Dora's Fairytale Adventure.
    • In the aforementioned episodes, the sun had a female's voice, but in this episode it has a man’s voice.
  • Diego, Daisy, Alicia, Baby Jaguar, Mama Jaguar, Abuela, Mami, Papi, Baby Blue Bird, and Swiper (if he was on his good side) are the only ones that are not invited to see the presentation of the biggest rainbow (Arco Iris).
  • In We Did It!, "Yay! Woo! Hooray!" is never said. Instead, the colors red, blue, green, and yellow are said in Spanish.
  • After the organ solo, Dora and/or Boots does not say, "Whoo!", just like in Fish Out of Water and Dora's Pirate Adventure.
  • This episode is a prequel of the Go, Diego, Go! episode Diego Saves Baby River Dolphin.
    • Coincidentally, both episodes feature Arco Iris and premiered in 2006.
  • Map only zoom wipes in the first and last segments after telling the viewers to go to the first and last locations.
  • This was one of a few episodes that aired on the Toggolino rebrand at its earliest in 2008.
  • This episode premiered on Nick Jr just one day after its 5th anniversary and the same day as Kicho's Magic Flute.
  • This episode (in the UK and Canada) premiered 4 days before the 2006 FIFA World Cup commenced in Germany and the same day that Baby Jaguar’s Roar premiered in the United States.
    • Additionally, Dora's Super Soccer Showdown, which will later be released on this exact day in 2014 also premiered before the World Cup began that year, except it was one week away.
  • In many scenes of the episode, Dora has her Season 3 look.
  • It is unknown how Arco Iris got covered in soot when he, Dora, and Boots landed on Rainy Mountain.
  • An extended version of De Colores was released on the Dora’s World Adventure album.
  • This episode premiered in the United States the same Save Diego premiered in Canada.
  • This episode was originally suppose to air on Tuesday, January 11, 2005. but it is unknown why it aired 3 years later.

  • Arco Iris did not have an orange (even though he combined the colors with red and yellow), an indigo, and a purple stripe, three colors that rainbows have in real life.
    • Also, unlike rainbows in real life, the colors red, yellow, green, and blue are out of order. Rainbows do not look like Arco Iris (although here it does not apply due to cartoon logic).
    • The order for real life rainbows are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple.
  • Dora and Boots mentioned to Arco Iris that they have been shy sometimes. However, Dora has never been shy in past episodes, she was just convincing Arco Iris to stretch out and show his bright colors in the sky.
    • It’s possible that Dora and/or Boots did have a shy moment or two, but never mentioned it/them in an episode.
  • In real life, rainbows can't:
    • Talk
    • Get dirty
    • Wear lifejackets
    • Stay on the ground
    • Magically paint uncolored objects
      • However, it does not apply here due to cartoon logic.
  • When Map says that Dora and Boots had to go over the Troll Bridge, he tells them to "watch out for those riddles of his". But the Grumpy Old Troll did not come up with a riddle in this episode. He instead gave them a challenge (fix the broken bridge).
  • When Mr. Troll made the bridge pieces fall apart, there were only two pieces on the ground, but while Dora and Boots are helping Arco Iris fix the bridge, there were more than two pieces on the ground.
  • 2023-9-11

    Here's proof

In many home video releases of this episode, only the beginning is shown, most likely to avoid spoiling the episode.

Running Gags[]

  • Arco Iris magically painting uncolored objects with his laser beams.
  • Whenever a correct color is chosen, Dora would ask the viewer to say it again following the phrase, "If you know the answer, say it loud!".
