The Happy Old Troll is the 11th episode of Dora the Explorer from Season 2.

In production order, it's the 15th episode of Season 2.

Nothing makes the Grumpy Old Troll happy… except there are three things that make him happy (a purple baby petunia flower, fireworks, and flying horses, which is the Pegasus). Help Dora and Boots find those three things to see the Troll's Happy dance.

Dora has some things that make her happy and shows the viewer her happy box. She gets out her blanket that her Abuela made for her when she was a baby. She gets out her bracelet which was a present from her parents. She gets out her flute which is what she plays every day (For the Christmas episode as a previous episode, it could reveal that Boots gave Dora a new flute as a Christmas present before this episode). There was also a friend Dora knows who makes her happy and it was Boots the monkey. Then Dora wondered where Boots was. The viewer tells her and she sees him swinging on a vine. Boots said the swinging on vines makes him happy. Suddenly, they hear Grumpy Old Troll, who is now out of his Troll Bridge. He thinks that there is nothing that makes him happy. However he figured out that he tried to find them but to no avail (thus, making himself upset) and the truth is, there are three exceptions that make him happy: a purple baby petunia flower, fireworks and flying horses (Pegasus). Dora & Boots wanted to know what happens if they found all three those things. Grumpy Old Troll said he would do his happy dance. Dora & Boots needed help on where to find the things that make Grumpy Old Troll happy. So they ask the Map. Luckily, he says that Dora and Boots asking him for help makes him so happy. Map knows just where Dora & Boots have to go to find what makes Grumpy Old Troll happy: Play Park. Before they can get there, they have to go over the big red hill like they did in their very first mission from the very first season, and across Fishy Lake. Dora & Boots got going and saw some happy animals like kittens and a dog. After that, they hear Swiper, who is the only one that doesn't have things that make him happy. Dora & Boots stop him by saying "Swiper no swiping" 3 times and he runs away. After Dora and Boots stopped Swiper, Dora puts her happy box into her Backpack for safe keeping. Dora and Boots walked up the Big Red Hill like they did in their very first mission from the first season. After getting up to the top, the hill starts moving. The big red hill was really the Big Red Chicken and what made him happy is the chicken dance. After doing the chicken dance, they now have to find Fishy Lake. They couldn't see it. Big Red Chicken stands on his tiptoes to get a better look. Sure enough, they can see it. Dora & Boots get a piggyback ride on Big Red Chicken. Along the way, they see more happy animals like a bird and the three little piggies rolling in mud. After the piggyback ride with Big Red Chicken, Dora & Boots slid down him and thanked him for the ride. After that, they approach Fishy Lake. Something splashes them and they got all wet which caused Dora & Boots to shrug and wanted to know who splashed them. They see a giant red fish, who's the opposite size of their little friend Baby Red Fish. Boots asked if they can ride across Fishy Lake on his back. The giant red fish said that he was just learning English and is more fluent in Spanish, perhaps he will be bilingual. Dora asked him in Spanish and that the giant red fish was glad to give Dora & Boots a ride on his back. They had to put on lifejackets for safety. Dora & Boots climbed on the giant red fish and he swims across Fishy Lake. But then, they saw snakes. Dora & Boots have to know when it's clear by saying the Spanish word "Vamos". They waited up to 3 times and then they shout out the Spanish word "Vamos" to the giant red fish. Dora & Boots thanked him for the ride and took off their life jackets offscreen. So far, Dora & Boots went up the Big Red Hill and across Fishy Lake. They were getting close to Play Park. They see Benny and his hot air balloon. Dora & Boots asked Benny for a ride on his balloon to Play Park. Benny would like to but his balloon was out of air. Luckily, Dora has an air pump in her backpack. They get it out and then they heard Swiper again. Dora, Boots, and Benny stop Swiper by saying "Swiper no swiping" 3 times and he runs away. Benny says that it takes 12 pumps to completely pump up the balloon. It was hard work. The viewer helps them out and together, they pumped the balloon 12 times. After pumping up the balloon with air, She puts the pump away in her backpack. Dora, Boots, and Benny climbed in and up they went. They saw a rainbow which made them happy. In no time, the balloon took them to Play Park. Once they got there, they see Isa in the sandbox and Tico on the slide. Now it was time to find the things that make Grumpy Old Troll happy. First, they had to find a purple baby petunia flower. They find it right away. Next, they had to find fireworks. Dora, Boots and their friends find fireworks. So far, they found 2 things that make Grumpy Old Troll happy and then they remembered that flying horses also makes him happy. All they had to do is show them all to Grumpy Old Troll. Dora explains that Grumpy Old Troll is far away. They call out to him by saying "Mr. Troll". The viewer calls out with them. Sure enough, Mr. Troll comes down with a small parachute. Dora told Mr. Troll that they found a purple baby petunia flower. Mr. Troll was amazed and it made him happy. They also told him that they found fireworks and it made him very happy. They even showed Mr. Troll the flying horses. Mr. Troll was happier than ever to see all his favorite things that make him so happy. He started doing his own happy dance. Dora, her friends, and the viewer joined in.

  • The tree where Dora showed her happy box
  • Rainbow

  • The Flash game "The Thankful Old Troll" is based on this episode.
  • Coincidentally, Chris Gifford voices the Grumpy Old Troll and wrote this episode.
  • This is the 6th instance where Grumpy Old Troll makes an appearance.
    • This is also the first time the Grumpy Old Troll is seen away from his bridge (excluding any of his Character Find segments).
  • An alternate version of the Travel Song plays (but it’s called "The Happy Song"). In it, Dora and Boots still say the places, but after that, they don't ask the question "where are we going?", they instead look for things that are happy. At the end, they sing out to the viewer that they all have things that make them happy and that Grumpy Old Troll has things that make him happy.
  • Unlike most episodes with the Travel Song, Boots does not follow behind Dora while listing the places. Instead, he walks in front of her. This also occurred in Egg Hunt and To the Monkey Bars.
  • Dora and Boots had to stop Swiper twice on this episode.
  • Dora and Boots ride on a fish instead of a boat to get across Fishy Lake.
    • The word "Fishy" is also used to describe something suspicious. It also means that one is doubting something.
      • Examples: A scam message from a friend of one's would be fishy to the person who got it. Or, Swiper's disguises would be fishy to Dora and Boots.
  • The book uses the same episode title seen here.
  • This is the 37th episode of the show.
  • After Dora and Boots sing We Did It!, the Blue Cursor doesn't click on Dora, it instead clicks on Grumpy Old Troll.
  • It is revealed that not everything makes Grumpy Old Troll grumpy, and that includes petunia flowers, fireworks, and flying horses, which makes him happy.
  • The Big Red Hill is Big Red Chicken as the first location Dora and Boots go first and he was the Big Red Hill in the very first Season 1 episode The Legend of the Big Red Chicken and he was the third and final location they went to but in this episode he's the first location.
  • This is the second episode Dora and Boots do the chicken dance, just like in The Legend of the Big Red Chicken. But this time, they do it with the Big Red Chicken.
  • When this episode was released on Musical School Days DVD, the Chicken Dance music is different.
  • When Dora mentions about the flute that Boots gave Dora as a present, she might be referring to A Present for Santa (a later episode from this season). It is possible that this episode occurred or produced after the aforementioned episode.
  • The Nick Jr. website from 2004-2007 lists this episode as "The Happy Show" instead of "The Happy Old Troll".
  • It is unknown if this episode ever aired of Noggin/the Nick Jr Channel (if not, then this is the only episode that never aired there).
  • This is the first episode where Play Park is the final destination.
  • In some scenes of this episode, Dora and Boots have their Season 3 looks.
  • This is the only Season 2 episode to premiere on a Friday.

  • If one looks closely, Dora and Boots are seen without their lifejackets while they are riding on the fish past the snakes and it is unknown why they disappeared.
  • After going across fishy lake, Dora still has her life jacket on during the 3 picture pop-up sequence. Her life jacket comes off after the 3 squares disappear.
  • The rainbow that Dora, Boots, and Benny went past did not have a red, indigo, nor a purple stripe, three colors that rainbows also have in real life.
  • When Dora and Boots are singing We Did It!, Backpack and Map sing the line "We Did It" but Backpack's mouth wasn't moving although her voice is heard, only Map's mouth was moving.
  • When Dora and the gang see the fireworks, they say "Oooooh!" but Benny's mouth doesn't move until before the line is finished.
