Picture Pop-Up Sequence

The Picture Pop-Up Sequence is the squares with pictures of the locations to go that pop up underneath Dora (and sometimes Boots).

In the sequence, Dora would say the places while pointing to each square (the last place is the destination), and then (season 1 and most of season 2) review what to do to get to their goal, and then ask the viewer, "So next comes...?" the second and third time, or (season 3 onwards) ask him/her where they go first the first time and where they go next the second and third time. Then the blue cursor clicks on the next place to go.

The sequence occurs immediately after the Map segment and once after each location passed, except for the destination.

For the first few seasons, the pictures in the squares were simple, but became more elaborate and detailed in later seasons. By the time the show switched to HD, the squares were redesigned with purple boarders and rounded corners, and given the show's new look of a mobile touchscreen game, the next location simply zooms in.

Season 1 and most of Season 2

Trivia

• In Season 1 and most of Season 2, Dora would list all the places after all the squares pop up, and review what they had to do the first time, and then ask "So next comes" the second and third time.
• In late Season 2 and Season 3 onwards, Dora would list the places as each individual picture pops up, and then she would ask "Where do we go first?" the first time and "Where do we go next?" the second and third time.
• In Season 4, the picture pop-up sequence is usually not featured that often. Instead, Dora would check Map multiple times. He would then track her progress by putting in a red checkmark on each place she passed (this got carried over to Dora from Dora Saves the Mermaids onwards). This was likely done due to avoid making the episode too long in addition to removing the star-catching.
  • When Map is checked instead of the Picture Pop-Up Sequence, when he places the checkmarks, he uses the phrase from the this sequence from late Season 2 and Season 3 ("Where do we go next?") instead of "So next comes/is...?".
  • The first episode where this happens was Dora's Fairytale Adventure and the last time was Baby Crab; however, the last produced episode where this happens was Dora's Dance to the Rescue.
  • The first half-hour episode where it happens is Daisy, La Quinceañera; however, the first produced half-hour episode where it happens is Star Mountain.
  • Dora's Fairytale Adventure and Dora's Dance to the Rescue are the only double-length episodes to not feature the picture pop-up sequence at all. Instead, Map was used (four times in Dora's Fairytale Adventure or three times in Dora's Dance to the Rescue).
  • There are only three episodes in Season 4 that feature the picture pop-up sequence: Star Catcher, Dora's World Adventure!, and Dora Saves the Mermaids.
  • Despite the picture pop-up sequence being removed in Season 4, when Dora asks where to go next, she is positioned in the same place as she would if there actually was a sequence.
• In the first two seasons, the images used to represent the places were more simplistic with solid backgrounds. The images became more detailed and complex with each new season.
• Click! and Hide and Go Seek are the only episodes where Dora lists each individual place as it pops up but still reviews what they have to do.
• Pinto, the Pony Express is the first time Boots stands behind the picture pop-up sequence with Dora.
  • Also, Best Friends is the only episode where he stands behind the picture pop-up sequence by himself.
• In the Season 4 episode Dora Saves the Mermaids/Season 5 onwards, the picture pop-up sequence remains the same, except now Dora puts checkmarks on each place she has passed like Map did in most of Season 4.
• Dora's Pirate Adventure is the only episode where the entire cast (Dora, Boots, Benny, Isa, Tico, Diego, and Baby Jaguar) stands behind the picture pop-up sequence, but it was only the third time, as the first and second times had Dora by herself as usual.
• There are two Go, Diego, Go! episodes to feature the picture pop up sequence: Diego and Dora Help Baby Monarch Get to the Festival and Save the Giant Tortoises. However, unlike Dora the Explorer episodes, the picture pop-up sequence was used only once, and it was before the first place (in both episodes).
• In the Season 3 episode The Super Silly Fiesta, the three squares popped up above the screen, but then Dora slides them down to the bottom and lists all the places, but still says "Where do we go next?".
  • This occurred during the third picture pop-up sequence.
• Lost Map is the first episode not to feature this sequence. Instead, Dora and Boots use the replacement map they made as their guide. The first time, before going to the first location, Dora draws out the locations one by one after reviewing each place like Map does. After that, she talks like Map by listing the places once and then three times with the viewer. After passing the first and second places, they still use their replacement map to figure out where to go next. This most likely paves the way to Season 4, where they checked Map multiple times. However, unlike Season 4 onwards, the red checkmarks were not placed after passing the places.
• Rescue, Rescue, Rescue! is the second episode not to feature this sequence.
• Best Friends is the first and only episode featuring two squares instead of three because Dora and Boots had to get pass one location to meet each other at the same place (Dora had to get through a gate and Boots had to get past a bunch of crabs).
• Dora's World Adventure! is the first episode featuring four squares in this sequence instead of the usual three.
• Dora in Troll Land is the only episode to have the record of five squares instead of three.
• Some sequences tend to reuse certain animations:
  • The animation of Dora in the first sequence from Hic-Boom-Ohhh! was reused a total of 16 times throughout Season 1, with Dora's mouth movements reanimated.
• There were a couple changes in the Picture Pop-Up Sequence in Season 7.
  • Each square has a purple outline rather than black, and the corners are rounded.
  • Instead of the pictures "popping up", Dora taps the screen to reveal the pictures of the places according to the episode.
    • This is apparently the return of where, after the pictures are revealed, Dora says each place, just like in Season 1 and most of Season 2.
    • Also when the place where to go next is highlighted, instead of the Blue Cursor clicking on it, it zooms to the screen and shines with a musical chime.
• In a few episodes (mainly Seasons 1 and 2), the background during the second picture pop-up sequence is the exact same one from the first time.
• In the first two seasons, Dora has her arms down. Beginning in Season 3, Dora now raises one arm, or occasionally both arms, when she asks "Where do we go first/next?", even when there isn't a sequence.
  • The first episode where she raises her arms after asking was The Lost City.
  • Boots' Cuddly Dinosaur is the last episode where Dora puts her arms down after asking where to go, though this happened for the first sequence.
• In the pre-HD episodes, Dora usually faces right when asking where to go. In the HD episodes, she now usually faces left, but faces right on occasion.
• The picture pop-up sequence does not appear in the 2024 reboot.
