Dora and Friends: Into the City! (or simply Dora and Friends) is an American educational children's Flash animated television series. The sequel to the original Dora the Explorer series, this series premiered on Nickelodeon on August 18, 2014 and ended on February 5, 2017 in the United States, followed by its Canadian premiere on September 6, 2014 on Treehouse TV. It is the second spin-off of Dora the Explorer. The first one being Go, Diego, Go!, it features Dora, who is a 10-year-old girl and her friends in a main city setting.

In 2013, Nickelodeon announced that it would produce a spin-off to Dora the Explorer titled Dora and Friends: Into the City! The series stars Dora, now a 10-years-old, who goes on city adventures with a group of five new friends. The series has been picked up for 20 episodes and had its primetime premiere on Nickelodeon on August 18, 2014.

The "new friends" as well as Dora's tween look was introduced in 2009. The characters include Kate (from Dora Saves the Crystal Kingdom and Let's Go to Music School), Naiya (from Let's Go to Music School), Alana (from Let's Go to Music School), Emma (from School Science Fair and Let's Go to Music School), and Pablo (from Pablo's Flute and Pepe the Pig's School Adventure) alongside the preteen Dora.

Plot[]

In this series, Dora, now 10 years old, goes to school and she lives in Playa Verde, which is a city. Together with the explorer girls and Pablo, Dora and friends work together and go on adventures while discovering the secrets of their city. Dora has a magical charm bracelet and a smartphone, complete with an app version of Map (voiced by Marc Weiner), to aid her. Kate is a girly girl who is fond of theater, while Emma loves music. Naiya is very smart and loves to read. Alana is a tomboy who loves sports, and is very good with animals. Pablo is a boy who loves playing soccer. The characters are all bilingual and speak Spanish in addition to English. However, the Spanish curriculum of this series has been expanded to using simple phrases and commands as opposed to solely the single Spanish words used in the previous series.

Trivia[]

  • In almost every promotional art, Dora wears a headband, but in the animation, she does not and she now has eyebrows.
  • The Blue Cursor is never used or featured in this show.
  • Boots now appears as a supporting character instead of a main protagonist.
  • Backpack is absent in Season 1 of this spin-off. She later appears in season 2 once again to rejoin Dora Márquez and her friends on quests and adventures.
    • In the first two episodes of Dora and Friends: Into the City!, Magic Land! and Mystery of the Magic Horses, Map is an app on Dora's phone called "Map App".
    • Also, this is the first series to have Backpack redesigned from her purple original counterpart to a new pink-stitched backpack and attached with a new flower named Bud.
    • On top of that, some promotional art that was released in 2014, Dora is seen with her backpack on, despite it not being meant to be seen yet.
  • Abuela appears older than her classic counterpart.
  • Swiper now appears as a central antagonist.
    • However, it would have been possible that his place will be replaced (possibly usurped) by El Mago and his allies.
